Having what it Takes - Nature vs Nurture

The interviews conducted with various successful business owners provided valuable insights into the personality traits that contribute to their achievements. Among the traits that were frequently highlighted, the following stood out as particularly significant: Confidence, a willingness to learn, the ability to delegate tasks effectively, reflective thinking, an optimistic outlook, professionalism, and a commitment to investing in resources that simplify their operational processes and enhance their overall efficiency. These traits not only define the character of successful business owners but also serve as essential components in navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.

Delving deeper into the importance of self-confidence, it is evident that this trait plays a crucial role in the journey of any aspiring professional, including those in the field of occupational therapy (OT). The self-confidence aspect is particularly vital, especially during the formative years of one's career. For instance, when an OT student encounters challenges such as a disappointing performance on an exam or quiz, it can lead to feelings of despair and self-doubt. In such moments, it may feel as though the world is collapsing, and the weight of the situation can be overwhelming, leading to thoughts like, "Oh my gosh, is this the end of my career in OT?" However, it is essential to recognize that such setbacks are merely stepping stones in the broader journey of professional development. The reality is that the career has not even begun yet, and these experiences are part of the learning curve that every professional faces. Therefore, cultivating strong self-confidence is paramount. It empowers individuals to bounce back from failures, learn from their mistakes, and continue moving forward with resilience and determination. This foundational belief in oneself can significantly influence one's ability to take risks, embrace new challenges, and ultimately achieve success in their chosen field.

Self-confidence piece is so important, even at times when you're OT student, you get lost in the shuffle of things. There may be like an exam or quiz that you take and you probably bomb it and then you're like, Oh my gosh, end of the world in my OT career and your career to even started yet. So the best piece is really having good self-confidence. -Participant 12



While others find the greater value in

being an independent thinker and intrinsically motivated, I would say are probably the top traits that you need to have that because you're only achieving things for yourself, like there's no boss calling and saying you need to get this done” - Participant 9

This perspective highlights the essential qualities that are particularly vital for individuals who choose the path of self-employment. Independent thinking allows one to explore unique ideas and solutions without the constraints often imposed by traditional workplace environments. This trait fosters creativity and innovation, enabling self-employed professionals to carve out their own niche in the market, adapting to changing demands and trends without needing external validation or approval. Moreover, intrinsic motivation plays a crucial role in sustaining long-term success and fulfillment in one’s work. When individuals are driven by their own interests and passions, they are more likely to invest the time and effort necessary to excel in their endeavors.

Unlike traditional employees who may be motivated by external rewards such as promotions or bonuses, self-employed individuals often find satisfaction in the process of achieving their goals, which can lead to a deeper sense of accomplishment and personal growth. When comparing the two traits of confidence and intrinsic motivation, both are indeed high-quality attributes that are essential for a self-employed professional.

It instills a sense of belief in one’s abilities to navigate challenges and seize opportunities, which is crucial in a competitive landscape. On the other hand, intrinsic motivation ensures that the drive to succeed comes from within, making the pursuit of goals more sustainable and aligned with personal values. In addition to these valuable traits, there is a significant emphasis on the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. For self-employed individuals, the lines between work and personal life can often blur, leading to potential burnout if not managed properly.

When professionals take the time to recharge and engage in activities outside of work, they return to their projects with renewed energy and fresh perspectives.
